Understanding Seal Rings: History, Materials, and Making Process

It has a very long history, dating back to the Mesopotamian era in 3500 BC. This seal ring was worn on the finger in ancient Egypt. The difference is that rings at that time were generally made of poly wood, stone, and ivory. By the Middle Ages, almost all nobles would wear a seal ring with the family crest or coat of arms as the family’s identifying symbol, which was passed down from generation to generation. Besides, it’s much easier to get a stamp than a name, especially in a spritz society where literacy rates are generally low.

In Britain and even Europe, the family emblem or coat of arms is a rigorous and extremely complex science. Because it involves the inheritance of the family tree, etiquette, and design norms, and whether there will be duplication and conflict with other families. The material of the seal ring

Usually, seal rings are made of 9K to 18K gold. Generally gold, a few will use rose gold and white gold. Because this kind of ring will accompany you for at least a few decades, the material is important! Ordinary materials do not have such a stable color.

However, in terms of the color of gold, there is little difference between 9K gold and 18K, and it is difficult to see the color difference without looking carefully. So budget carvers can choose 9K gold to make. It will be much cheaper, but the portions will be lighter.

Some sculptors will also use stones to replace the gold in the ring, commonly used are black agate, lapis lazuli, chicken blood stone, and so on. Personally, I don’t think it’s nice. It doesn’t look fancy. They’re supposed to be on a budget, too. Because the gold in the ring part is the most used material and is the most valuable part, it must be much cheaper to replace it with stone.

But I don’t think it’s necessary to save this part of the budget since we are going to make seal rings, after all, these seal rings are usually worn for a lifetime. You can choose a cost-effective pneumatic engraver but do not save the budget on the choice of materials.

How to choose the shape of the seal ring?

Seal rings are differentiated according to the shape of the ring surface, the most commonly used and most recommended are Oval and Cushion. The other shapes I don’t think will last long. For long-term wear, I recommend using time-tested shapes like Oval and cushion pros.

Usually, the Cushion shape of the ring surface is larger, which is more suitable for men. Because of its large area, it can accommodate more content. Girls may be more suitable for oval rings, which will look more elegant than cushion shapes.

What is the process of making seal ring?

Because the seal ring is usually worn for many years or even a lifetime, the material used in the production will be relatively thick, and the thickness of the ring surface is between 1.7mm and 2.3mm. I don’t make rings hollow, and although this kind of hollow is usually found in fashion brands, I don’t think it is enough to last. Different production methods of rings of the same material will make the price vary greatly.

As for production, the most popular and convenient way is to use the lost wax method. The sculptors make a model of the ring in wax, place it in a mold, and finally melt the gold with an airbrush and pour it into the mold to replace the wax. This method is relatively simple and suitable for mass production, especially when making objects with complex shapes. However, the later stage will need more dressing, most of which is slowly modified with a file. Most sculptors use electric abrasives.

Even in the UK, there are not many brands and artisans who carve entirely by hand. Today’s European countries often combine hand engraving and laser engraving directly, making the ring surface very smooth after being carved.

The more traditional way is to use a heavy hammer to repeatedly strike the whole nugget until it is shaped like a ring and then saw off the excess. Although the pure manual way is not as neat and uniform as the mechanical one, the details are richer and more durable and have stronger artistry and appreciation. However, the disadvantages of manual work are also obvious, that is, it takes a lot of energy and time. Because it is difficult for craftsmen to make, it is also expensive.
